at high speed upon very thin paper, such as tissue paper, and to deliver the printed sheets in a pile or stack. Tissue paper and other thin papers, however, are very difficult to handlein a machine, and the present invention in certain of itsv main features is directed toward the delivery of sheets of tissue or other very thin papers, and especially the delivery of such sheets of relatively large size. In certain aspects, the invention provides for the delivery either singly or in collected groups of the thin sheets fiat, sheet after sheet, or group after group of sheets, on top of a stack. The invention also provides for cutting the sheets from the running printed web, and for collecting them when so desired.
The invention in one of its aspects, provides for delivering the thin sheets by laying them out upon a support with the air pressed out from beneath and the sheets being held in delivered position at a plurality of points. This action is repeated successively, the so delivered sheets being built up into a. stack. Other features and objects ofv the invention will be stated orv indicated hereinafter in connection with the detailed description ofthe illustrated embodiment.
Referring by way of example to the illus form of press referred to is provided with a form cylinder 1 having planographic printingplates, usually consisting of flexible sheets of zinc or aluminum, mounted upon the surface of the cylinder in the usual manner. A damping mechanism, indicated generally by 2, is provided, and also suitable inking mechanism 3, all of which may be of usual or otherapproved or suitableform.
The printing plates upon the cylinder 1 print upon the surface of an offset or transfer cylinder 4, having suitable impression receiving and impression impartingv surfaces, such. as rubber blankets or the like,
the cylinder andolfset surfaces likewise bemgof usual ,or approved form. Cooperatng with the offset cylinder 4 is an impression cylinder 5, the webai being drawn from a roll y and being printed upon bythe cylinder 4 as it passes through the impression between the cylinders 4 and 5. The web is shown guided over rollers 6, 7 and 8, the roller or rollers 8 being preferably propeller or driving rollers.
Means are provided for cutting the printed sheets from the web, and also for collecting the sheets prior to delivery, when this is desired, whereby the sheets may be delivered singly or in groups, as may be preferred or found convenient. In the embodied form of mechanism, two cooperating cylinders are provided which cut the web into sheets, one of the cylinders also acting either as a sheet collecting cylinder or as a single sheet delivery cylinder when desired. This cylinder in the present embodiment also cooperates with a reciprocating bed to deliver the sheets as hereinafter described.
Referring first to the cutting operation, a cylinder 10 is provided having a cutting blade 11, which. is rendered alternately operative and inoperative, that is, it is in cutting position on one revolution of the cylinder 10 and is then silenced for one or more revolutions of the cylinder 10, this cylinder being of less diameter than the delivery cylinder 12. In the present embodiment a sheet is cut on every revolution by cylinder 12. The cylinder 12 is provided with a cutting member 13, cooperating with the blade 11 on the cylinder 10 to sever the sheets successively from the web.
Sheet holding means are provided on the cylinder 12 of suitable form, and as embodied comprise a row of impaling pins 14 which impale the head of the sheet across the cylinder 12 to hold the sheet thereon. The pins 14 are longitudinally movable, and are retractable within the cylinder 12 to deliver either a single sheet, or a group of collected sheets, from the cylinder 12. Suitable operating means are provided for controlling the movements and positions of pins 1 1. In the embodied form thereof, each of the pins 1 1 is carried in a bearing aperture in the cylinder 12, and at its inner end each pin is pivotally connected to a corresponding arm 15. The arms 15 are fixed to a shaft 16 mounted transversely in the cylinder 12. Fixed to one end of the shaft 16 and located exteriorly to the cylinder 12 is a cam operated actuating arm 17. Mounted upon the machine frame is a cam 18, which ongages with the arm 17, or a. cam roll thereon, to retract the pins l l, the pins being held in the projected or sheet engaging position by a spring acting on the shaft 16, which may be of the usual construction, and is not shown. a
Means are provided for controlling the retraction and projection of the impaling pins 1 1 to effect the delivery of the sheets singly, or for collecting them and delivering them in groups, from the cylinder 12.
For this purpose, as embodied, the cam 18 is not mounted directly on the machine frame, but it is carried upon an arm 19, which arm is pivotally supported at 20 upon the machine frame. The other end of the lever arm 19 is pivotally connected it 21 to a rod 22, which rod is actuated by a suitable cam (not shown) to move the cam 18 into and out of cooperating relation with the arm 17.
When the mechanism just d scribed is in the position shown in Fig. 2, the cam 18 engages the arm 17, and thereby rocks shaft 16 to retract the impaling pins 14 within the cylinder 12, thus releasing the sheets on the cylinder 12 to permit their being taken by the cooperating delivery devices. As the arm 17 moves off the cam 18, the spring of shaft 16 will impart thereto a slight rocking motion and the iinpaling pins 14 will again be projected to the sheet-taking position. When the lever arm 19 is rocked upwardly at the left and downwardly at the right in Fig. 2, cam 18 is moved out of engaging position with respect to the arm 17, and the impaling pins are not retracted on that revolution of the cylinder, in which case the sheet is not delivered but travels on with cylinder 12. By timing the movements of the arm 19 and consequently the position of cam 18, two or more sheets may be collected upon the cylinder 12 and be delivered together in a group.
Delivery means are provided by'the invention capacitated and especially designed for the delivery and smooth laying out one upon the other of large sheets of tissue paper or other very thin sheets, either singly or in groups. In certain aspects of the invention, these delivery devices comprise a traveling bed co'ciperating directly with the delivery means, such as the cylinder 12 or other delivery device, to engage the delivered sheet, or group of sheets, at the head thereof and also at various separated points along the sheet or sheets, to lay them down smoothly on the top of the stack or pile of delivered sheets and to hold them laid. Cooperating therewith are provided means for maintaining the top of the stack or pile of sheets at a uniform or constant level or relation with the cylinder 12, or other sheet delivery device. Means are also provided for moving the cylinder 12, or other corre sponding device or mechanism, and the sheet receiving bed toward and from each other to provide for the delivery of the sheets in groups and for the idle or return travel of the bed.
In the embodied form of the means above a u r .11, b a lelellel to, a ioimon ar y iecipiocaom in 25 travels to and fro on. guideways (see especially Fig. in the machine f me, the bed 25 being preferably provided with rollers 27 running on the guides 26. In the embodied form of actuating m' chanisn'1 for the bed 25', an endless sprocket chain 28 is provided running over an idler sprocket 29, which is ournaled in the machine frame, and over a driven sprocket wheel 30, likewise mounted on the machine frame at or beyond the other end of the travel of the bed 25. Fixed to the chain 28 is a pin 31 projecting into a groove 32 formed in the bottom of the frame of the table 25. Thus as the pin travels along one of the straight reaches of the chain 28, the bed is carried at uniform speed in one direction, and as the pin 21 passes around the sprocket wheel at either end, the bed slows down, reverses its direction at the dead center of the sprocket wheel, picks up speed as the pin 31 travels about the sprocket wheel, and as it reaches the transverse diameter thereof, the bed 25 is traveling at full speed in the opposite direction. The pin 31 will move to and fro in the slot 32 dependent upon its location on the parallel reaches of the chain 28, and as it passes about the two sprocket wheels. The bed is connected to travel at the surface speed of the cylinder 12 while the sheet or sheets are being transferred from the cylinder to the bed, The speed of the bed may be varied at other times to provide for the delivery of different numbers of sheets and to avoid, if desired, idle reciprocations of the bed. So far as concerns many features of the invention, other and any convenient or suitable driving means may be provided for the bed 25.
The illustrated form of driving means for sprocket wheel comprises a shaft 33 upon which sprocket wheel 30 is fixed. Fixed also on shaft 33 is a pinion 52, meshing with a pinion 53 on a shaft 54. On shaft 54 is a bevel gear 34, which meshes with a bevel gear 35 on shaft 36, which shaft is driven in any suitable manner.
The embodied form of means for maintaining the top of the pile or stack of delivered sheets 2 in uniform or constant relation r position with respect to the cylinder '12, or corresponding device, during the delivery, comprises a sheet support 40, mounted for vertical movement on the bed 25 (see Figs. 2, 3 and 7). The sheet support 40 is mounted at its corners upon vertically dis-- posed screw rods '41, with the upper ends rotatably connected. to bosses 42' on. the bottom of the sheet support 40. The screw rods 41 are in threaded engagement with screw-threaded apertures 43 in the bed One of the screw rods 41 is provic ed at its lower end with a star wheel 44 fixed thereto, and which is actuated by a suitable trip on the machine frame on each reciprocation of the bed 25. The screw rods 41 are caused to move together by suitable means, and as embodied each screw rod 41 has fixed thereto at its lower end a sprocket wheel 45,
and a sprocket chain146 runsover the four;
sprocket wheels 25- thus causing the screw rods 41 to rotate together, and as the bed 25 reciprocate-s, the sheet support 40 is gradually lowered on successive reciprocations of the bed so as to compensate for the row ing thickness of the sheet stack 2 as. the sheets or groups of sheets are successively deposited thereon. Sprocket chain 46 may also run over tensioning and guiding idlers 51.
Means are provided for engaging the sheets as they are delivered to the bed 40 or to the stack a of sheets thereon, and for holding the sheets as delivered in position on the bed or stack, and in the preferred form such sheet holding means act on the delivered sheets not only at their heads but at a plurality of separated points along the sheet or sheets, this feature being especially desirable with sheets of tissue paper or other thin paper. In accordance with one feature of the invention, these means engage the sheet or sheets at or immediately prior to the instant when any such point of engagement on the sheet leaves the cylinder, whether such point is the head of the sheet or some point farther along the side of the sheet.
In the form of such sheet holding means for the delivery bed, shown in Figs. 1, 2
and 3, impaling pins 47 are provided, arranged transversely across the bed 25 and projecting upwardly in front of or 'througl'i the sheet receiving bed 40. The position of these pins is such that they will impale the head of the sheets as they pass on the cylinder 12, and by the retraction of impaling pins 14 onthe cylinder 12, the head of the sheet or sheets will be taken with shown arranged along the bed 25 and along,
the edges of the sheet stack 2. Cotiperating recesses 49 are preferably provided in the cylinder 12, behind the sheet or sheets thereon. The sheets are pressed over the pins 48 as the successive pins pass the point of contact between the cylinder 12 and the top of the sheetstack 2, as will be understood from Figs. 1 and 2, the sheets thus being 7 held at a plurality of points across the head and along each side thereof, andif desired across the tail of. the sheet, as the various parts of the sheets leave thecylinder 12. and
' are, laid along the top of the stack ,Thus
the air is pressed out from beneath the 7 sheets, and they'are' .firmly held at a plurality of points as they are laid upon the top of the stack or pile 2.
I-nFigs. 4 and '5, grippers areshown for engaging the sheets and holding them upon! the. top; of the. stack a in lieu of theiimpal ing pins, although for most classes of work as on very thin papers, the impaling pins are not objectionable. In the embodied form of gripping mechanism, a supporting plate 55 extends upwardly from the bed 25 and is provided with supporting brackets or lugs 56. The grippers 57 are carried upon arms 58 pivotally mounted on pins 60, supported by the brackets 56. Pins 60 are held against rotation by suitable means, the embodied form showing a nut 61 threaded on the end 62 of the rod 60, which rod is shouldered against the opposite side of the bracket 56, as shown in Fig. 4.
The gripper arm is pivotally mounted on the rod 60, and is impelled to the closing position by a spring 63, coiled about the rod (#10 and having one of its ends fixed to the gripper and the other end fixed to the head of the rod 60. The tail 65 of the gripper arm has a cam roller 66, which is actuated by a cam 67, located on the machine frame in position to open the gripper as the sheet or some desired point in the sheet is laid on the stack, and permitting the gripper to close immediately afterward on the just laid sheet. The cylinder 12 is provided with apertures 68 to permit the grippers to swing in above and to immediately close upon the sheets.
In the embodied form of means for mov ing the sheet supplying and sheet receiving elements of the delivery mechanism apart for the idle stroke or strokes of the sheet receiving bed, the cylinder 12 is moved in its bearings. As embodied the shaft 70 of cylinder 12 is mounted at each end in an eccentric 71, which is journaled in the machine frame. The eccentrics 71 are provided with arms 72, to which arms are pivotally connected reciprocable rods 73, working in apertures in lugs 74: on the machine frame. At their other ends, the rods 73 are provided with cam rollers 75 cooperating with cams 76 upon a shaft 77. Spring 78 working between the bearing lugs 7d and collars '79 on the rods 7 3 keep the rollers 75 to the cams 76. Suitable driving means are provided for the shaft 77, and as embodied a bevel gear 80 is fixed on the shaft 77, and meshes with a bevel. pinion 81 fixed on the shaft 82. Fixed also on the shaft 82 is a bevel pinion 83, meshing with a bevel pinion 84 fixed on shaft 36.
When it is desired to deliver the sheets from the cylinder 12 in groups of three, the driving chain will be three times the length of the circumference of cylinder 12, and the parts will be timed so that the head of the sheet stack 2 will meet the head of the sheets on cylinder 12 on every third revolution of the cylinder. It will be understood that this particular arrangement is merely exemplary, as the timing and cooperation gen erally may be varied to deliver different numbers of sheets at a time. The general operation of the machine will be fully understood from the explanations made hereinbefore in connection with the different devices and need not be operated.
From all the foregoing it will be understood that a mechanism has been provided realizing the objects and advantages set forth, together with other objects and advantages. It will be understood also that changes may be made from the mechanism as shown and described without departin from the principles of the invention and without sacrificing its chief advantages.
