Abstract

323,740. Sykes, G. A. Oct. 8, 1928. Air and gases, controlling humidity and direction of flow of; small chambers.-In a process for drying fruit, vegetables, fish, meat, wood, hides, &c. the material is subjected alternatively to heat in a still atmosphere and in a current of hot gases, the gases being moistened during the early stages of the process. The gases are kept substantially free from oxygen, and the current may be periodically reversed. The material is dried on trays 10 located in separate passages formed by portions 11, 13, 16 in a drying chamber. Inlet flues 15, 23, controlled by a damper 33 communicate with outlet flues 18, 20 controlled by a damper 22. Gases from a burner 30 pass through a flue 29, having baffles 32, and over a tray 26 containing water. With the dampers in the position shown the gases pass upwards through and over the trays 10. Dampers 34 controlling the passages 14 may be utilized to equalize the heat supplied to the trays. The dampers 22, 33 are moved to close the flues 15, 18 in order to reverse the direction of the gaseous current through the trays. To effect heating in a still atmosphere the dampers are moved to a position midway between the flues. The dampers 34 may also be closed. The partitions 25, 27 are of heat insulating material.
