Abstract

163,244. Wettig, H., and Topf & Soehne, J. A. Sept. 21, 1920. Gravity, materials descending by; air and gases, controlling circulation of.-Relates to apparatus of the type in which granular materials are dried within a perforated shaft by side currents of hot and cold air, the directions of the air currents being reversed by means of valves fitted within the drying-chamber, and consists in dividing the material within the shaft into layers by means of horizontal plates which are operated so as to allow the material to pass intermittently through the shaft. The invention also consists in means for heating the drying-current during its passage through the chamber. As shown, the perforated shafts 10, Fig. 1, are supported upon the false bottom 9 of the drying-chamber 1, which has coldair passages 16 communicating through flaps 15 with the stoke-hole or the atmosphere, the space between the sides of the chamber and the shafts. being divided into air chambers 17 by adjustable plates 18. The material within the shafts is divided into layers by removable plates 20 arranged level with the air - chamber plates 18. The flue gases from the furnace 4 pass through pipes 6 contained within a chamber 7 which communicates through nozzles 8 with the hot-air chamber 19. Hot or cold air may be passed into the air chambers through flaps 21 and 22 arranged in the false-bottom and the sides of the chamber respectively. The flow of air through the chambers and the material may be reversed by adjusting the air-chamber plates 18 and the flaps 21, 22. The flaps 22 may communicate directly with the atmosphere, and the materials may be discharged either continuously or intermittently from the shafts into troughs 13 containing screw conveyers 14. Modifications are described in which the airchamber plates are either fixed and provided with flaps or are hinged, to the sides of the chamber. In a further modification, air passages 28, Fig. 4, are arranged around the shafts communicating with the cold air passages 16 and the hot-air chamber 19, and the control air passage communicates through a valved chamber 32 with the atmosphere and the hot-air chamber.
