Abstract
323,699. Field, M. B. April 20, 1929. Magnetic compasses.-In a quick acting, dead beat, liquid magnetic compass an annular card, of small diameter in relation to the diameter of the bowl, is supported by wires which are extended to bear damping blades operating in the liquid surrounding the card. These wires are bent downwards to clear a lubber wire attached to the bowl and the damping blades are generally about midway between the card and the bowl. The cover consists of a plano convex lens inclined to the horizontal. The annulus 1 is supported by wires 4 projecting radially outwards from the pivot carrying dome 5 and carrying the damping blades 3 which can be of other shapes besides that shown. The magnets 2 are circularly bent forming in effect interrupted rings with N and S poles at opposite ends of a diameter. The bends in the wires clear the lubber wire 7. To prevent displacement of the pivot the cup shaped member 12 surmounts the pivot and is sustained from the bowl 6 by a cross member 13. The bowl 6 is suspended in the housing 10 by resilient pads and an expansive chamber 9 allows for liquid expansion. The lens 8 gives a magnified image of the annulus visible over a wide angle. Specification 127,135 is referred to.
