Abstract

Firebridges. - In firebridges compris. ing a number of metal bars 3, placed side by side, a locking bar 16 is pivotally mounted in a longitudinal opening 2 in the top of the metal bed-plate 1, so that its upper end projects above the opening and, being suitably shaped, engages a projection 15, or a recess, at the bottom of the bridge-bars. The locking bar is fitted below with a balance weight 18, which normally keeps it in engagement with the bridge-bars. In the construction illustrated, a pair of pivot pins 19 are bolted into the locking bar, one near each end, each having its inner end bent at right-angles so as to lie parallel with the locking bar in bearing brackets 20 secured to the lower side of the bed-plate. The bridge-bars are of I-shaped cross-section, so that when they are arranged side by side the flanges 11 abut together leaving internal spaces, from which air, admitted from below through the longitudinal opening 2, passes out through openings 9 formed by recesses in the front flanges, and the opening 10 at the top. The bars engage with the saddle 4 by projections and recesses. The front faces of the bars are preferably slightly chilled.
