Compressing plant, general arrangement of ; valves, arrangement and actuation of.-In a refrigerating machine having a multiple effect " cooler e between the condenser b and the evaporator f, the valves for admitting the gas from the cooler e to the compressor are actuated by the circulating fluid. The compressor discharges through pipes d<1>, d<2>, separator d<3>, and pipe d<4> to the condenser, whence the liquefied refrigerant flows through a pipe el and valve n to the cooler e, and through a valve p and pipe f<1> to the evaporator, which is connected through a pipe f<2> to the compressor inlet port a<6>, Fig. 3. The gas space of the cooler e is connected by a pipe l and branches l<1>, l<2> to valve casings j<1>, j<2> containing sliding piston valves k<1>, k<2>. These valves are carried by double plungers k<3>, k<4> arranged in cylinders communcating at their outer ends by pipes m<1>, m<2> with the compressor discharge pipe d<4>, and at their inner ends by pipes m<3>, m<4> with the opposite inlet valve passages a<4>, a<5>. At the end of a compression stroke, the momentary peak pressure is transmitted through one or other of the pipes m<3>, m<4>, and overcoming the condenser pressure moves one of the piston valves to admit gas from the cooler to the compressor cylinder. As soon as the compressor piston begins the return stroke, the condenser pressure preponderates and again closes the correspond ing piston valve k<1> or k<2>.
