Abstract

323,022. Foster, C. E., and Oughton, H. C. Sept. 7, 1928. Thermometers. - The moving coil of a millivoltmeter connected to a thermocouple a, for use as a pyrometer or to a current carrying shunt, is adapted upon breakage or short circuit of the instrument leads 2, 3 to swing to one or other of its extreme positions, in which the instrument needle operates relay contacts for an alarm or controlling device. The operating, E.M.F. is supplied by a battery 9 connected, with ballasting resistances rl - - r<4>, as a normally balanced Wheatstone bridge network across the moving coil 8. Modified arrangements are described whereby a millivoltmeter with differential coil windings may be used or a suppressed zero effect produced by unbalancing the Wheatstone bridge. The variation in cold junction temperature in the electric pyrometer arrangement can be compensated for by using platinum or nickel wire in the resistances r', r<4>.
