I n d i c a t i n g by thermostatic devices.- The level of a liquid is indicated bv measuring the resistance of an electrically heated wire partly immersed in the liquid. The temperature of the part of the wire outside the liquid being higher than that of the part immersed, since the liquid absorbs heat more quickly than the vapour or air above it, the resistance of the wire varies with the liquid level. The wire may be insulated by oxidizing or enamelling it. The platinum or like wire A, B placed in a liquid forms one arm of a wheatstone bridge A, B, D, G, E, C. A fine iron wire resistance J is inserted in the battery circuit so as to maintain an approximately constant current. External variations of temperature are nullified by placing in the opposite arms of the bridge a similar platinum wire kept out of contact with the liquid by a tube K.
