Abstract

322,761. Marks, Sir G. C., (Bates Valve Bag Corporation). Sept. 11, 1928. Securing paper bags, special means for.-In a valve bag having a closing seam extending across the end of the bag and valve formed either by folding in a corner of the bag or by the usual diamond fold, a sleeve member is held in the valve by the closing seam, extends outwardly beyond the valve and is adapted to be closed for sealing the bag after filling. Within the formed valve 22, Fig. 5, is placed a folded sheet 23 of paper which projects as at 24 beyond the side of the bag. The .usual reinforcing strip 25 is applied to the open end of the bag and secured by stitching 26, the stitching securing also the edges of the sheet 23 to form a sleeve. The valve is then passed over the usual filling tube, the filled bag being thrust off the filling machine and given a quarter of a turn so that it rests on a conveyer with its valve and the sleeve therein uppermost. The filling operation causes the sleeve to be Battened in a direction transverse of the bag whereupon the corners of the flattened sleeve are folded inwards and the end thereof is folded over prior to the conveyer moving the bag past a sewing or stapling device adapted to secure the folds. Alternatively, especially if the sleeve is formed of cloth, its projecting end may be gathered together and secured by a twisted wire. In modifications, the sheet which is to constitute the sleeve 35<a>, Fig. 12<a>, is secured to the inside wall of the bag 36<a> after the gusset fold has been opened out, and-the sheet is folded over on to the outside wall thereof before the corner is tucked in to make the valve, or the usual extension 23<a>, Fig. 1<a>, on the bag tube is made much longer and is folded over on itself as at 27<a>, Fig. 4<a>, to form the sleeve. In making these extensions. pieces are cut from the bag tube and may be used to form the sleeves for other bags. As applied to a valve formed by folding the end of the bag tube, incisions 11<c>, Fig. 3<c>, are made in the tube 10<c>, and a rectangular sheet of paper 12<c> is secured to one corner of the tube by adhesive 13<c>. The upper end of one wall of the bag is folded down to form a flap 15<c>, Fig. 4<c>, corner flaps 17<c>, and an upstanding flap 18<c>. Adhesive is applied along the edges 19<c>, 20<c> of the flap 18<c> and the flap 17<c> remote from the sheet 12<c>, and the flap 15<c> is folded on itself prior to the flap 18<c> being folded.over to overlap its edge and close the end of the bag except for the sleeve 22<c>, Fig 5<c>, formed by the sheet 12<c>. Specifications 307,483 and 314,712 are referred to.
