Abstract

322,556. Carpmael, A., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Sept. 15, 1928. Yarns &c., treating with liquids. -Vegetable effect threads which are resistant to heating and ironing and fast to alkali are made by introducing aromatic or heterocyclic sulphonic acid residues of basic character into alkalized cellulose. The alkalized cellulose may be esterified by means of sulphochlorides containing basic groups, such as sulphochlorides of tertiary amines of the benzene or naphthalene series, quinoline-8-sulphochloride, and aminotoluene sulphochlorides, or sulphochlorides containing other substituents, which can be subsequently converted into basic groups, may be employed. The reaction may take place in the presence of an organic solvent, with or without the addition of a catalyst, such as a phosphorus chloride, or a.basic substance, such as dimethyl aniline. In examples, (1) cotton yarn is alkalized by treatment with alcoholic caustic soda solution and esterified by treatment with dimethylaniline-p-sulphochloride in toluene or benzene, the product is immune to substantive dyes, remarkably fast to alkaline treatments, and very resistant to heat ; instead of dimethylaniline-psulphochloride diethylaniline - p - sulphochloride quinoline-8-sulphochloride, ethylbenzylaniline-p. sulphochloride, dimethyl-l-naphthylamine-4-sulphochloride, or 1-methyl-4-aminobenzene-3-sulphochloride may be used (2) alkalized cotton yarn is esterified with m-nitrobenzene sulphochloride in trichlorethytene, and the nitro group subsequently reduced by treating the product with stannous chloride in acetic acid; the esterified yarn can be diazotized and coupled with azo components; other nitro-sulphochlorides, such as 1:2-chlornitrobenzene-4-sulphochloride, 4-nitrotoluene-2- sulphochloride may be employed, and the reduction may be carried out in neutral, acid or alkaline media by means of stannous, ferrous, or titanous salts, alkali polysulphides, formaldehyde, hydrazine and the like. Specification 195,619 is referred to.
