Abstract
322,498. Marks, Sir G. C., (Cameron Machine Co.). Sept. 6, 1928. Winding webs.-In a web-winding machine in which the winding-roll and top pressure roller rise as the material accumulates on the winding roll, means are provided to maintain parallelism of the winding-roll and pressure roller. The web C, Fig. 1, is wound by the winding-drums A, B on to the winding-roll E which is carried by bearings 10 secured to the lower ends of a pair of double faced vertically slidable racks 9. The back faces of the racks engage gears 8 fixed on a cross shaft 7 and the front faces engage pinions 20 on a shaft carried by the bearings of the top pressure roller F so that as the roll E rises, its shaft and that of the roller F remain parallel to themselves. The roll E may be. manually raised when desired by means of a hand-wheel 1. Figs 1 and 2. In a shaft rotatable in a sleeve 2 and carrying a pinion 3 meshing with a gear 4, the shaft of which carries a sprocket 5 connected by a chain to a sprocket 6 on the shaft 7. Independent raising of the pressure roller F can be effected by a second hand-wheel 12 freely mounted on the sleeve 2 and fixed to a sprocket wheel 14 connected by a chain to a sprocket wheel 15 fixed to a gear 16 engaging a gear 17 which drives by a pawl 17a and ratchet wheel 18, a sprocket wheel 19. Round the wheel 19 and round a similar wheel at the other side of the machine pass chains each connected at one end to a slidable weight 21 and at the other end to the bearing of the roll F. Ratchet wheels 11, 13 and co-operating pawls 11<a>, 13<a> prevent backward rotation of the wheels 1, 12.
