322,489. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Sept. 3, 1928. Hydrogenation, destructive. - In pre-heating carbonaceous materials from 300‹ C. to the temperature required for destructive hydrogenation, the heat is supplied to the said materials in admixture with a part, at least, of the hydrogenating gas. Brown coal is mixed with a high-boiling coal hydrogenation product and is pumped at a into a heating coil I of Siemens-Martin steel. The sludge leaves at b at 320‹ C. About 30 per cent of the hydrogenating gas entering through a heat-exchanger R is drawn off at hand mixed with the coal-sludge at c. The mixture is heated in a coil II, of slightly alloyed steel, to 430‹ C. and enters the reaction chamber A at e. The remainder of the hydrogenating gas is pre-heated to 430‹ C. in a heat-exchanger V and enters the reaction chamber through a porous plate at f. The! reaction products leave at g and pass through the heat-exchanger R.
