Abstract
322,217. Digby, W. P. Aug. 30, 1928. Alloys are prepared by first heating the constituents in a gas, coke, or oil fired crucible and at a later stage, preferably after about threefourths of the total alloying period, transferring the mixture to an induction furnace. Fluxes, such as the chlorides of magnesium and calcium, may be used if desired. The method relates particularly to the preparation of alloys containing iron and copper or iron, copper and nickel, and, if desired, chromium, and promotes the regular distribution of the constituents in the product. Copper-iron alloys with a high percentage of copper, e.g. 75 per cent, prepared by this method may be used in a Bessemer converter or open hearth furnace for the large scale production of alloys of copper and iron containing 10 per cent and upwards of copper; or copperchrome iron or steel may be made by adding such alloys to iron or steel and chromium in a gas, coke, or oil fired furnace.
