Hardening the ground.-A process for solidifying permeable sandy masses such as loose sandy rock consists in introducing in succession chemical solutions such as, for example, silicic acid or soluble silicates, and suitable acid or salt solutions, which react in such a way that a gel is formed which consolidates the treated mass. For example, a solution of silicic acid, followed by a solution of common salt or an acid solution. may be used. The method may be used to treat natural soil or banked up material or may be applied in sinking shafts, or in constructing foundations. In consolidating soil, the solutions are poured or sprayed on, or injected at a suitable depth. If the material treated is dry, a preliminary treatment with water or soap solution may be used. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 10478/12, 4805/14; 247,976, 260,031, [both in Class 140, Waterproof &c. fabrics], and 262,223.
