Abstract

Steering-gear. - In adjustable vehicle vibration dampers for steering-gear, of the kind in which the resistance may be regulated or controlled from the dashboard or other part of the vehicle the vibration dampers are controlled by means worked by vacuum under the control of the driver. Figs 3, 6 and 7 show a fluid friction vibration damper comprising an oscillating vane 15 and a fixed abutment 23 in which a port 21 with a non-return valve 19, an adjustable port 30 and a port 22 with a valve 20 is operated by levers 33, 34 and piston 35 in a suction cylinder in communication with vacuum apparatus under the control of the driver. A reservoir 25 is provided for making good any loss of fluid by leakage and a duct 28 with an adjusting screw 29 is provided to allow a limited amount of flexure. In a vibration damper having arms and friction discs the mutual pressure of the latter is controlled by a suction chamber and a piston mounted on the central pivot of the vibration damper.
