Abstract
220,084. Carwardine, G. May 14, 1928. Buffers; vibration-dampers; dash-pots. - An auxiliary spring suspension device for motor vehicles comprises a lever pivoted on the unsprung or sprung portion of the vehicle as the case may be, and a spring-pressed member cooperating with the lever and having such a shape that the resistance to the angular deflection of the lever decreases for the whole or portion of its range upon increase of movement of the lever. The combined suspension has a longer period of oscillation through the range in question than the primary suspension acting alone. The spring- pressed member may be further shaped so that it assists the deflection of the lever from a predetermined point in its range. As shown, a lever 5 connected to an unsprung portion of the vehicle is keyed on a shaft 4 which is mounted in a casing 2 secured to the chassis 1 and is rigid.with a lever arm 7 carrying a roller 8 engaging a lever 6 rigidly attached to a shaft 4, the rotation of which is resisted by a torsion or other spring. The lever 6 is shaped so that resistance to angular deflection of the lever 5 is in accordance with the law specified above. Rotation of the lever 5 may be damped by attaching thereto a friction ring 13, Fig. 6, engaged by an adjustable band 12 carried by the casing 2. The band is mounted on a slotted member 16 engaging a stop 14 on the casing so that the lever may have a limited movement without frictional restraint. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 8, hydraulic restraint is used instead of frictional. The levers 6, 7 are formed so that they provide a movable oil-proof partition dividing the casing into upper and lower chambers. Fluid passes from the upper to the lower chamber through the port 17<a>, hollow pulsating piston valve 17, and port 17b the travel of the valve being limited and adjusted by a screwed spindle 18 having a longitudinal flat 20 to permit flow of the fluid from the lower to the upper chamber through the passages 21a, 21. The flow in both directions is thus adjusted by means of the spindle 18, the resistance to rebound being preferably the greater. By increasing the diameter of the piston valve or making its movement large in comparison with the size of the ports, the lever 5 may have a limited movement without restraint.
