Abstract

321,747. Lillicrapp, W. J., and O'Shea, D. L. Aug. 27, 1928. Locks, permutation.-The steering column 4 of a motor vehicle is locked against rotation by a slidable bolt 7 of a permutation lock, the inner end of the bolt engaging one or other of a number of recesses 8 formed in the column or in a collar secured thereto. The lock casing has a portion 3 embracing the column and provided with lugs 5 by which it may be secured to the dash-board &c., and a cylindrical portion 2 housing dished permutation members 10 rotatable on the bolt 7. The bolt has projections 13 co-operating with members 10 so that the bolt is locked against endlong movement unless gaps in members 10 are aligned to allow passage of the projection by setting members 10 to predetermined positions. A pin 17 on the bolt engages a slot 16 in a fixed bearing block 9 to hold the bolt against rotation, and an operating knob 18 is secured to the bolt by a weak screw 19 adapted to break if undue force is applied to the bolt. Members 10 have spring-pressed balls 21 making clicking engagement with apertures in the bolt to facilitate setting the members 10 in poor light. The portion 2 may have a rotatable sleeve, not shown, to cover the sight-opening 14 to exclude dust &c.
