Abstract

321,729. Willis, N. E. July 21, 1928. Cleansing-compositions.--For scouring wool or washing other textile materials (e.g. artificial silk), a dilute aqueous solution having a faint alkalinity of form PH 7.5 to PH 11, and containing a small proportion of a water-soluble carbohydrate, a protein, and an antiseptic, is used. A concentrated composition including a gelatinizing carbohydrate such as starch, and adapted to be dissolved directly in water, may be prepared. The faint alkalinity is maintained by alkaline buffer salts (0.025 to 0.25 per cent) such as trisodium phosphate, borax, or ammonium carbonate, which are more suitable than sodium silicate. Alkali soaps are excluded. The carbohydrate may be glucose, soluble starch, cane sugar, or hemi-celluloses. The protein may be blood albumen, ox-gall or bile, gelatine, or Irish moss, which have emulsifying or surface-tension lowering properties; other emulsifying or wetting out agents such as turkey red oil, amido-sulphonic acids. &c. may be added. Water-soluble gums or mucilages may be added. The antiseptic may be sodium fluoride, phenol, sodium formate, corrosive sublimate, or formaldehyde. Urea is included in an example.
