Abstract

321,639. Edblom, L. A., and Knott, E. K. Aug. 7, 1928 Radiations, treating diseases with; syringes and like appliances.-Apparatus for treating pathological conditions of the blood comprises an exposure chamber c in which blood withdrawn from the circulatory system through a needle a and tubes d is exposed to the action of ultra-violet radiation before being returned to the system through a tube g and needle b. By means of a pump f blood is caused to flow through the circuit at a predetermined rate. A .container e is also provided from which citrate. or oxalate solution may be introduced into the stream of blood to prevent coagulation. The exposure chamber c is provided with baffle walls c<2> defining a tortuous passage c<3> of uniform crosssection, the ends of the walls and the junctions of the walls with the sides of the chamber being rounded off so as to eliminate sharp corners. A lens of quartz or other material permeable to utra-violet radiation forms one side of the chamber c, and through this lens ultra-violet radiation from a suitable generator, preferably of the watercooled type, is directed on the blood passing through the chamber. Instead of the exposure chamber c, other types of chamber may be employed, for example, a plain spiral tube i or a bent tube j, both of quartz or other material permeable to ultra violet radiation.
