Abstract

321,457. O'Neill, J. H. Aug. 11, 1928. Springs, arrangement of; guiding vertical play. - Driving and steering wheels of motor vehicles are mounted independently and are guided vertically under the control of suspension springs on a frame which swivels in brackets extending from the frame of the vehicle. The wheel 1 is dished and its axle 2 rotates in a bearing member 3 with sliding surfaces 5 which are guided vertically on tubes 6 forming part of a wheel frame member 7, the upper ends of the tubes being connected by yokes 9 mounted, bv means of a swivel and thrust bearings, in the ends of arms 11 extending from the frame of the vehicle. The wheel is driven by a transverse shaft 16 through universal joints 17 connected directly to its axle 2. The wheel frame member 7 is located in the plane of the wheel and substantially vertically above the point of contact of the tyre with the ground. Helical springs 21 control vertical movements of the bearing member 3 relatively to theframe member 7.
