Forced ventilation; ventilating-conduits.- A building structure a having two or more storeys is provided with a vertical escape shaft or tower enclosing a stairway, lift, &c., for use in the event of fire, and such shaft c is constructed with one or more of its walls f<1>, f<2>, or extensions of its walls, of hollow formation so as to constitute one or more air conduits extending vertically through the structure and communicating with the various floors b<1> - - b<3> by means of apertures h disposed above the corresponding entrance doorwavs d' - - d' to the shaft. The conduits f, f<2> serve to carry away smoke &c. should a fire occur. Inclined plates j are provided below the apertures h in the conduits f, f<2> so as to deflect the smoke from the doorways d<1> - - d<3> when the doorways g<1> - - g<3> are open. A chimney-like structure k is fitted at the top of the tower so as to extend through the door l of the building, and the various conduits m of such structure are adapted to communicate with the conduits f<1>, f<2> and a conduit leading from the upper floor b<1>. An electrically-driven fan may be employed in any of the discharge conduits.
