Abstract

320,904. Pilkington Bros., Ltd., and Phelps, D. V. July 25, 1928. Production of metal.-Relates to glass which is transparent to ultraviolet rays, and the tendency of this glass to lose its power of transmitting the rays. According to the invention, a glass which does not lose materially its transparency to the rays is made by ensuring that all or nearly all, of the iron that may be present in the glass is in the form of ferric oxide. The iron is oxidized to the ferric condition either by melting under oxidizing conditions or, preferably, by introducing into the batch an oxidizing agent, such as potassium nitrate. Specification 263,410 is referred to.
