Abstract
320,607. Grapes, G. Hamilton-. July 11, 1926. Vaporizers, external. - Relates to devices for trapping unvaporized particles of fuel in the charge, more especially when the engines is cold, this unvaporized fuel being vaporized and returned to the mixture stream. The mixture passes from the carburetter through a curved separator element 6 connected by a flange 7 to the inlet manifold, and provided at the middle of its length with a passage 8 opening into an exhaust-heated retort 14. The inlet of the element 6 is provided with a trap device 9 containing a catch groove 10 similar to that described in Specification 293,824, the fuel trapped in the groove 10 passing through a conduit 12 to the uppermost trough 13 of the retort 14. The trough 13 communicates with a collection chamber 17 through a conduit 16 controlled by a thermal valve 5 which closes at a predetermined temperature. The chamber 17 communicates through an overflow conduit 24 and a vapour discharge conduit 25 with an overflow chamber 22, and is provided with a partition 18 containing a port controlled by a thermal valve 21 which opens at a predetermined temperature. The top of the chamber 22 comprises a horizontal portion 25<a> and an inclined corrugated portion 26 which is integral with the wall 27 of the chamber 17, the space 38<a> between the retort 14 and the top of the chamber 22 being traversed by the exhaust gases which enter at 38 and pass out through the muffled connection 39. Below the corrugated portion 26 is a corrugated tray 33 provided with strips 36 of capillary material, the space between the parts 26, 33 communicating at one end with the passage a between the partition 18 and wall 27, and at the other with a channel 42 partly surrounding the exhaust outlet 39. The chamber 22 is provided also with a suction conduit 43 leading to the catch groove 10, and the retort 14 is provided with an air inlet passage 44 as described in Specification 283,240. When the engine is cold, the major part of the unvaporized fuel is trapped in the device 9, 10 and passes through the conduit 12, trough 13, valve 15 and conduit 16 to the chamber 17, from which any excess overflows through the conduit 24 to the chamber 22. As soon as the chamber 38<a> reaches a predetermined temperature, the valve 21 opens, and the fuel collected in the chamber 17 flows over the tray 33 and is vaporized, the vapour passing through the passage a and chamber 17 to a conduit 40 leading to the entrance of the element 6. The liquid from the chamber 22 is also drawn by capillary action over the tray 33 and vaporized. When the engine leaches normal running, the valve 15 closes, the fuel collecting in the trough 13 overflowing into the retort 14 where it is vaporized, any unvaporized particles passing the trap 9 entering the retort through the passage 8. Should the liquid in the chamber 22 rise above the level of the mouth of the conduit 43, it is drawn by suction into the groove 10.
