Abstract

320,561. Elder, A. S. W. Nov. 30, 1928. Cross-staves. - A surveyor's cross-staff enabling a rightangle offset to be laid off from any desired point along a given line comprises a base 1 on which are mounted vertical members 3, 5 which can be adjusted in slots 12 and are connected by a crosspiece 11. A plate 8 mounted on the member 11 is slotted to receive a slide 7 on which are mounted the sights 10 having their axis at right-angles to the centre line of the members 3, 5. The slide also carries a hook for attachment of a plumb-line. The members 3, 5 are first brought into the line of sight of a theodolite and are secured by clamps 4, 6. A tape is then run out from the theodolite and the slide 7 is adjusted until the plumb-bob is at the desired distance from the centre of the theodolite. The right-angle offset is then laid off by means of the sights 10.
