Single coatings; coating with adhesive and powdered materials.-A shoe stiffener comprises a base of fibrous material with a superficial layer or coating of stiffening material in a finely divided state on one or both sides. If the base is thin, the superficial application may be used alone, but otherwise the base is impregnated with a comparatively weak solution of a stiffening compound, e.g. celluloid or cellulosic ester, before the superficial coating is applied. The superficial coating may be applied as a finely divided suspension of cellulose ester in water, with a binder of rubber latex and inert fillers, such as gypsum, added, or by thinly spraying or sprinkling it over the surface. The stiffeners are cut from a sheet of fibrous material prepared as above and may be stitched readily into the shoe upper, a solvent or heat being employed to prepare the stiffener for lasting.
