Printing with special inks and materials. - A rubber-cellulose medium containing a salt or salts of cellulose and rubber, or a rubber-like substance such as balata. or gutta percha, prepared, for example, as described in Specification 274,968, [Class 70, Indiarubber &c.], is employed, with or without a colouring-matter, as a printing-ink, chiefly for use in intaglio printing. A thinner, which does not act adversely on the medium, and which may consist of a solvent of the medium or colour, may be added, so that by the use of different colours and different concentrations, varying effects may be produced. The medium and colour may be mixed before use, or mixing can be effected during printing. The material to be printed may be printed with the uncoloured medium and subsequently dyed by means which will not take where there is printing, According to examples, a rubber-cellulose medium containing 2 per cent of raw rubber and 6 per cent of cellulose in the form of ester or ether is mixed with soluble dyes, lakes, or pigments: and a thinner may consist of a mixture of butyl alcohol. toluol, methylethylene glycol, and tetrahydronaphthalene.
