Abstract

319,815. Manley, G. E., and Alford & Alder (Engineers), Ltd. June 27, 1928. Leaf filters; filter-presses. - A filter specially intended for the treatment of the lubricating oil of internal-combustion engines has elements formed by bags of cloth 5, Fig. 3, drawn over corrugated plates 1, the upper ends of which are provided with nipples 2 extending into a duct for the discharge.of oil filtering through the bags. The elements are held against movement in the casing, except in their own plane, and the nipples are conical and loosely mounted on the plates so as to be self-centring in the holes in the discharge duct, while spring means press on the lower ends of the elements to hold the nipples in the holes. The elements may be mounted side-by-side in a casing 11, the nipples 2, which may have base-portions slotted to fit loosely on the edges of the plates, communicating with a common outlet duct 9 formed in the cover 8 of the casing. The elements are spaced by ribs 13 on the casing and rest on a plate 14 which is pressed upwardly by a spring 15, so that tight joints are made by means of washers surrounding the nipples 2. The plates 1 may have slots 7 to facilitate the collection of oil for discharge through the nipples. The upper part of the duct 9 may be removable, as shown in Fig. 6. Fig. 7 shows an arrangement in which filter elements 12 are arranged radially in a cylindrical casing between ribs 13 on the casing and on a central core-piece 28. The outlet duct in this case is annular and its upper part is held in position by a three-armed plate held down by a nut on the part 28. Elements 12, Fig. 9, as described above, may be held in position by springs 39 in open frames 35, which are bolted together with intermediate spacing-frames 44, Fig. 10, after the manner of a filter-press. The spacing-frames surround corrugated plates 45 of copper or other metal which is a good conductor of heat. The spacing-frames may be used in pairs with air circulating between them, or hollow spacing frames may be provided.
