Abstract

319,224. Crozier, R. H. May 18, 1928. Coking processes; retorts .-In distilling coal, shale, &c., the heat contained in the vapours drawn from the various stages of the retort is used to vaporize fractions of lower boiling point and concentrate fractions of higher boiling point, the residual fractions thusconcentrated being returned to the retort to be cracked in contact with the residual coke. Coal, shale, &c., is fed continuously into a vertical retort 1 of the kind described in Specifications 212,770, 245,499, and 283,639 and provided with flues heated by gas burners 11 which may be supplied with gas from the retort. Vapour fractions are withdrawn from the retort by pipes 2<a> - - 2d and each fraction bubbles through residual liquid in a corresponding bubbling box 3a - - 3d before passing through a condenser such as that described in Specification 240,502, [Class 32, Distilling &c.], a liquid seal maintaining the liquid in the bubbling boxes at a constant level. The heavier fractions drain through pipes 5 to a main 9 and pass therefrom through a pipe 10 into contact with the coke in the hottest part of the retort thereby improving the quality of the coke by the deposition of carbon on it.
