Roller-and-breast mills.-In a grinding mill for paints &c. of the kind described for example in Specification 274,162, the base 1 and end supports 2 a.re formed as a single casting having lugs or brackets cast thereon to support an adjustable hopper base 6 and feed throat 10 formed as a single casting and arranged to be hingedly or detachably connected to the lower casting so that machine work on the castings may be effected whilst the two castings are assembled in position. The hopper is hinged to a rod 9 mounted in bearings 22 and is adjusted by a wedge 19, an arm 43, connected to the rod 9, being provided with a counterbalance weight 44. The other side of the hopper is provided with a lug 25 which is clamped by a stirrup 23 on to a wedge 20 placed between the hopper base and support 2. A grinding bar 39 is carried in a recess 11 cast in the hopper base as desscribed in Specification 301,781, but the cross-bar 45 against which the pressure screws 42 react is cast in one piece with the hopper base 6. Brackets 4, projecting from the supports 2, support by means of rods 27, 28, a semi-circular collecting tray 5 of cast metal having a machined edge adapted to receive a scraper, the tray being supported by springs 33 mounted in containers 31 on the rod 28 and by hinges 35 on the rod 27. The tray 5 is adjusted relatively to the roll 15 by a handle 36 which operates an eccentric 38 placed under the tray. The handle 36 is placed in the inoperative position when multiple grinding is resorted to as described in Specification 316,907. The bearings 18 for the roller are adjusted, preferably, by means of a double wedge as described in Specification 303,537.
