Abstract
318,647. Beaver. C. J., and Glover & Co., Ltd.. W. T. March 7. 1928 Coating materials in long lengths.- In the impregnation of webs of paper or other fibrous material for use in the manufacture of electric cables, the chamber in which the impregnation is effected is evacuated together with a supplementary chamber containing the feed roll. Prior to impregnation, the web passes over steam heated rollers and afterwards passes out at a slit. between two pieces of rubber and through a supplementary tank containing impregnating liquid which seals the exit. A chamber a<1> containing the feed roll i is closed by an air-tight cover a<2> and the impregnating chamber a is provided with airtight doors a<6> and a cover a'. A partition a' divides the chamber a, the impregnating liquid being contained in the right hand portion and heated by steam pipes g. Prior to entering the liquid, the web passes over steam heated rollers a<8> and in the liquid over rollers a<5> carried by a removable frame a<4>. The orifice a<9>, Fig. 4, through which the web leaves the chamber a, is closed by rubber blocks b<1> mounted in adjustable blocks b<2>. To seal the aperture, a supplementary tank b is placed above it and is filled with impregnating liquid by a pump h, the liquid being kept at a constant, level therein by an overflow pipe h<4> controlled by an adjustable valve. Steam heated scrapers f are provided to remove excess liquid before the web passes over a roller c<2> revolving in a tank c whereby a non-adhesive coating is applied to one side of the web, which is then wound on a take-up roll d driven by friction gearing to allow slip. The winding appara.tus is enclosed in a casing l in an atmosphere and at a temperature which prevents absorption of moisture.
