Abstract

318,624. Sulzer frees Soc. Anon. Sept. 8, 1928, [Convention date]. Hydraulic-seal safetyapparatus.-A hydraulicseal safety-apparatus for use in the pipes supplying gas to burners, such as those used in autogenous welding apparatus, is fitted with a byepass having a closing- device, such as a mercury seal, through which the gas supply normally passes, the hydraulic seal only coming into operation when a high back - pressure occurs. The hydraulic seal comprises a U-tube 3, filled with water to the level a through a pipe 14 and adapted to be drained through a branch 15. Gas enters by a pipe 1 and passes to the burner through a pipe 4 while a pipe 6, dipping into the outlet branch, communicates through a reservoir 7 and pipe 8 with the bottom of the seal and serves to collect any liquid ejected from the main seal and return it thereto. The mercury seal is arranged to offer a less resistance to the normal flow of the gas and a greater resistance to its flow in the reverse direction than that offered by the main hydraulic seal. This seal comprises a pipe 11<1> dipping into mercury contained in a cup 16 adjustably mounted on a chamber 9 connected by a pipe 10 to the outlet branch of the main seal. The vertical pipe 11<1>, in place of the cup, may be made adjustable.
