Abstract
318,373. Reed, H. S., and Lamie, R. D. Aug. 17, 1928. Rotary furnaces; charging and discharging.-A continuous process for distilling carbonaceous material and burning the residue consists in heating the material such as coal in a rotary retort 8 containing angular and spherical grinding elements of heat conducting material so that the residue is powdered, the hot powdered coke being delivered to a combustion chamber. Coal from a hopper 10 is preheated in a trough 9 having a conveyer screw 91, and passes by a conduit 11 to a multiple screw feeder 12 comprising a lower feed screw 122 and two troughs 123, 125 of different lengths having feed screws 124, 126 respectively. The retort is divided into chambers 85, 86, 87 by partitions 83 having scalloped edges 831 and perforations 832 to allow passage of ground coal but to retain the grinding elements which are reduced in size as the coal approaches the outlet of the retort. Buckets 881 raise the coke and drop it while hot into a discharge conduit 13 from which it is fed by a screw conveyer 131 to a valve controlled discharge pipe 134 and delivered by another conveyer 192 to a furnace 19. Primary air for combustion is supplied by a fan 196 and conduit 195 secondary air entering by inlets 197. Air for gas burners 185 is preheated in flues 22 which surround the smoke flues 21. The combustion products from the burners pass by conduits 4 around the retort 8, and, by adjusting dampers 61, 71 in flues 6, 7, Fig. 2, the heating of the trough 9 may be regulated.
