Abstract

317,592. British Cotton Industry Research Association, Nuttall, T., and Shorter, S. A. July 3, 1928. Openers, cleaners, etc.; feeding openers, cleaners, &c.-In the treatment of cotton by opening machinery, pneumatic mixing apparatus, blowing room and cleaning machinery, &c., dust and dirt are removed as the cotton is travelling in attenuated form by the provision of high speed dust cages, so arranged that the cotton accumulates in one position on part of the cage, the dust &c. being drawn away by suction through the end of the cage, and is automatically liberated in another position by a supply of clean air drawn from outside the cleaning apparatus, and forwarded to the succeeding devices. In applying the arrangement to a porcupine, opener a, Fig. 1, forming part of an interconnected group of machines, the high speed cage b is situtated at the discharge orifice. The cage b is carried by end spiders b<1>, b<2> mounted on sleeves b<8>, b<9> on a stationary shaft d<1>, and is rotated by a pulley b<10>. The shaft d<1> is supported in cross bars c carried by brackets b<11> from the machine frame. This shaft carries a main diametral damper d carried by spiders d<2>, which also support short circumferential dampers b<6>, b<7>, at each end in the chambers e. The cotton passing from the opener is drawn on to the upper part of the cage and the dust &c. is drawn through into the upper part dx of the cage above the damper d and is drawn away through holes into the end chambers e and thence through ducts e<1> which communicate with a fan. Clean air enters through apertures f<1> in the cylindrical supporting brackets b<11> and passes into the lower half of the cage below the damper d and is drawn through the cage. taking the accumulated cotton with it into the usual trunk y leading to the usual cages. Sheet metal walls g<1> cover the lower part of the cage and converge to the trunk g. A cover plate i encloses the upper part of the cage and a roller h rotating at the same surface speed as the cage is provided between the covers i and g<1>. The high speed dust cage is also described as applied to a Buckley opener forming part of a group of machines for opening and conveying cotton. The cages may be arranged between a Lords opener and a Crighton opener and between the Crighton opener and the usual dust trunk, or may be applied at the delivery point of a hopper feeder before the cotton passes to a conveying trunk.
