Abstract

Waterproofing; proofing against bacteria etc.; proofing processes; wood, treating with liquids. -Material to be impregnated with liquid is suspended in the liquid in a container under pressure, and by means of a continuous series of variations of the volume occupied by the liquid, there is produced a continuous series of impulses or variations in the pressure, depending on the compressibility of the liquid and of the! material, and on the elasticity of the container, the change of volume being effected by mechanical displacement of a portion of the liquid. The liquid may be kept under pressure by means of a pump, and the variations of pressure produced by means of a byepass, or by adjusting the pump so that the speed of the delivery stroke is suddenly accelerated as the end of the stroke is reached. The apparatus shown, particularly applicable to treating hides with tan solution, comprises a drum 3 having a filling funnel 4 and a connection 12 to the pressure system. A support 7 for the material treated is, provided, and one side 8 of the drum is removable. The delivery side of a pump 13 of any suitable type is connected to the pipe 12, the inlet side being connected to a tank 14. Between the delivery valve 15 and the drum 3 a byepass 17 is provided, connected to the pump through a cock 20, and to the supply tank 14 through a cock 21. The hides are suspended in the drum 3, and the tan solution put into the tank 14. The pump is operated to fill the drum, the cock 5 at the top of the latter being open. When the drum is full, the cock 5 is closed, and the pressure increased to about 100 lbs. per square inch. The cock 20 in the byepass is then opened, so that variations in the pressure are produced by the action of the pump. In a modification, the liquid in the drum is separated from that in the pump system by a diaphragm, to which the impulses are applied. This method is applicable in the case of corrosive fluids. In place of a diaphragm a cylinder containing a piston may be employed.
