Abstract
317,400. Stout, H. H. Aug. 15, 1928, [Convention date]. Wire; rods.-In a process for refining and working copper the scrap metal is formed into briquettes, cleaned by hydrogen, water gas, &c. at a temperature below the melting point of the metal, and then extruded through a hollow plunger. The billets 17 produced from scrap copper in an hydraulic briquetting machine are fed into a gas-tight electric furnace 18 and subjected to the action of the cleaning gas entering by a pipe 20 and leaving by a pipe 21. The billets are moved through the furnace by a conveyer system and heated to about 1500‹ F. The cleaned billet is fed into another chamber in front of a plunger 23 which forces the billet into a chamber 22, an aperture block 28 being then forced by a plunger 25 against the billet, causing the latter to be extruded in wire or rod form. The plunger 25 is stopped before the entire billet has been extruded and a fresh billet fed into the chamber 22 forming with the stub of the previous billet a homogenous mass. Other gases such as nitrogen, steam carbon-dioxide and hydrocarbon gases may be used with the hydrogen or water gas. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers also to other metals such as zinc. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
