Abstract

Directive signalling. - The effect of quadrantal or similar asymmetric error on the true direction of the incoming wavefront in direction finding equipment is automatically compensated bv applying the necessary correcting-movement by mechanical gearing to the graduated dial across which the indicator needle moves. As shown in plan in the Figure, a frame aerial F is mounted to rotate about an axis O. An arm G is fixed to the axis O, so as to move with the frame aerial, and carries a pinion B which gears with a pinion A fixed to the framework, and a pinion C which gears with the pinion B. A pin P on the latter engages with a, radial or curved slot K formed in the graduated indicator dial D. The result is that as the frame aerial is rototed the chain of gears imparts an independent movement to the graduated dial D, the amount of which depends upon the radial distance of the point P from the centre Q. This and the shape of the slot K can be adjusted to agree with the existing quadrantal or other error. Alternatively the gears A and C can be arranged as an epicyclic pair. Or the necessary correction can be shown on a separate indicator dial.
