Catalytic materials, preparation of; radiation, treating substances with.-Catalysts for use in reactions in which hydrogen under pressure is employed are exposed prior to the reaction to rays of high frequency such as X-rays or rays from radio active substances in the presence of inert gas or of gases such as are to be used in the reaction. An example describes the preparation of an iron catalyst for use in ammonia synthesis by treatment with rays from a R÷ntgen tube for twenty-four hours in an atmosphere of nitrogen and hydrogen.
