Abstract

Ammonia is decomposed to nitrogen and hydrogen by passing it over a catalyst, consisting of nickel supported on alumina, maintained at 600-900 DEG C., the alumina having before the application of nickel to it a specific surface of more than 20 m.2/gm. The alumina may be made by heating alumina monohydrate or trihydrate at 500-1000 DEG C. for 2 hours. The catalyst support is desirably at least partly gamma alumina and may be converted to kappa during use, but not more than 20% of the alumina should be in the alpha form. The nickel content of the catalyst may be up to 50% by weight. The alumina hydrates may be made by seeding or carbonation of a sodium aluminate solution. The catalyst, which should be sulphur free (<0.5%) may be made by impregnating alumina with a sulphur-free nickel salt, especially nickel nitrate, then draining, drying and converting the salt to metallic nickel. After the drying stage the impregnation may be repeated in order to increase the content of nickel salt. In converting the salt to nickel the salt may be first decomposed to the oxide by heating, then reduced by hydrogen or ammonia. The reduction is conveniently carried out in the catalyst chamber of the NH3 cracking plant. Specification 768,091 is referred to.
