315,547. Blakiston, R. June 15, 1928. Purifying liquids; domestic filters.-A portable water-softening device suitable for domestic use consists of a vessel 1. Fig. 1, with a loose cover 2 and containing zeolite 3 and having at one side a vertical channel 4 containing filtering-material 6, such as cotton wool, porous stone or the like. The water to be treated is poured into the channel 4, rises through the zeolite and is drawn off by a tap 5. The filtering material 6, which may be attached to a rod 7 by which it can be placed in position and withdrawn, ensures that the passage is slow and that the water is in contact with the zeolite for a sufficiently long time. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 3, the water is supplied over the zeolite and leaves through the filtering- material 6.
