Labelling.-In a machine for applying labels, stamps &c. to packets, of the kind described in Specification 22932/14, in which a gum plate applies gum to a label &c. and removes it from a pile the label being then seized by a gripper plate which applies it to the packet, the transfer of the gummed label being effected at a station past which the two plates move synchronously in the same direction and in paths which approach each other and then recede from one another, the gum and gripper plates are rotatable about parallel axes and are movable in directions radial to the axes. The machine shown is for applying labels along one side and both ends of packets of tea which are fed by an intermittently-operated conveyer 11, Fig. 1, provided with channel-shaped holders 12 from which the packets are pushed transversely into an intermittently-rotated pocket wheel 18 from which they are discharged, after the label has been attached, by a pusher 21 into a channel the sides of which may be provided with brushes which fold the ends of the label over the ends of the packet. The gum plate 51, supplied by a a roller 126, is mounted on a stem 55, Fig. 5, slidably mounted in a carrier 52 which can be rocked about a shaft 56 to present the gum plate to the gumming position shown and pile of labels respectively. This is effected by an oscillating sector 90 and gears 54, 74. Radial movement of the gum plate is effected by means of a pinion 58, Fig. 5, engaging rack teeth on the stem 55, the pinion being rotated by teeth 57 formed on the forked end 59 of the shaft 56, longitudinal movement of which is effected by a cam-operated lever 60 and connections 62, 63. The gripper plate 71 is similarly mounted for rocking and radial movement about an axis parallel with the shaft 56, and is provided with pivoted grippers 100 which are mounted on a rock shaft 101 operated by a cam 103 on a longitudinally-movable shaft 102. Fig. 9 shows the gum and gripper plates in the transfer position. The gum plate has left the label pile 112 with a label adhering thereto. The grippers 100 seize the projecting edge of the label and strip it from the gum plate. The gripper plate then carries the label till it is vertically over the packet in the top-most pocket of the pocketwheel when the gripper plate is moved radially downwards to stick the label to the packet. The various parts are operated by cams on the main shaft 33.
