Abstract
315,270. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Langmuir, I.). July 10, 1928, [Convention date]. Bulbs; deposit collectors; holders.- A high-power bulb for lighting large areas and for use in lighthouses &c., is provided with means for cooling the gas filling comprising a) metal chamber 11 sealed to the glass wall 10 of the bulb, and means for directing the heated gases through the cooling-chamber without permitting them to contact while hot with glass parts of the bulb. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the gases rise through a chimney 31 and descend through the annular space between it and the wall of the chamber 11. The chimney may be double-walled and provided at the lower part with an extra heat-insulating layer to prevent it from heating the cooled descending gas. Heat-conducting vanes 34 may be welded between the chimney and the wall of the chamber 11. The chamber 11 may be cooled by a water circulator 37, Fig. 1, arranged on the exterior, or by air-cooled fins 40, Fig. 2, attached to it. A bulb constructed as shown in Fig. 2 may be mounted in a lautern comprising an annular lens 43 and a casing 41 fitting around the fins 40, air being blown through the lantern by a fan 42' to cool the bulb wall 10 directly and the cooling-chamber 11. The bulb is held by a support 44 embracing its contracted end 17.
