Abstract

314,150. Groves, W. W., (Cook Labora. tories, Inc.). April 10, 1928. Capsules.-Surgical syringe cartridges comprising glass tubes 7, Fig. 2, closed at one end by rubber plugs 8 employed in use as plungers, and at the other end by flanged plugs 9 having internal axial recesses, are filled by needles pressed through the plugs 9 and comprising inner and outer tubes 23, 29, Fig. 3, the tube 23 communicating with a bifurcated passage 33 in a detachable needle point 32 and the tube 29 having a lateral aperture 31. The upper ends of the tubes communicate respectively with nipple 24, Fig. 2, secured axially in a plug 21 and with an annular space 22 in the plug 21 surrounding the tube 23 and having a lateral aperture leading to a nipple 26. The nipples 24, 26 are connecting by rubber tubes 14, 28 with a supply of sterile medicament and a vacuum pump respectively. The plugs 21 may be inserted in the plugs 9 by hand or two or more may be held in a frame 15 for filling a corresponding number of tubes simultaneously. In the latter case the frame 15 is furnished with spring-pressed plates 38, Figs. 2 and 5, which bear upon the plugs 9 and prevent their withdrawal from the tubes 7 when the needles are removed. The tubes 7 are held during filling in vertical spring clamps 37 unon a rigid support 11, a rubber cushion 42 being interposed to obviate breakage and prevent the plugs 8 from being drawn into the tubes by suction. The frame 15 is carried on a pivoted arm 16 Fig. 5 which is depressed by a treadle 17 and returned by a spring 18. Screw-adjusting means 46 are provided to adjust the distance of penetration of the needles into the cartridges. The tubes 14 are furnished with filters 45 and pinch cocks 44 and extend to the bottom of the medicament vessels 12 which are open to the atmosphere through filters 13 preventing the ingress of bacteria. The needles 23 are inserted sufficiently far into the cartridges to permit the apertures 31 just to communicate with the interior thereof. Air is thus drawn off from the upper end of the tubes and the medicament delivered at a point lower down, the ports of the passages 33 being preferably inclined in a downward direction. Complete filling of the tubes is thereby effected and foaming of medicament involving loss through the apertures 31 is prevented. A vacuum trap may be provided in the suction tubes 28.
