Bed-reciprocating apparatus.-An apparatus for converting rotary into reciprocating motion, which is especially applicable for reciprocating the beds of printing-machines, comprises a single unit of gears adapted to be attached to the frame of the machine as a self-contained unit and to drive the bed at a constant speed during the main portion of its travel and to slow down, reverse, and accelerate the bed at each end of the stroke. As applied to a two revolution cylinder machine, the impression cylinder 2 of the machine is driven by gears 3, 11 from the main driving-shaft 10 which drives the bed-reciprocating unit. This comprises a shaft 21 with a gear wheel or wheels 32 engaging racks 9 on the bed 8, and the shaft 21 is driven alternately in opposite directions during the medial portions of the stroke of the bed by means of sectors 15, 16, on a shaft 18 driven at constant speed by a gear 12 on shaft 10 and a continuous gear 14 on shaft 18. Sector 16 engages a gear 20 on shaft 21 for one third of each rotation of shaft 18, and after an interval of one sixth of a revolution, sector 15 engages a gear 19 on a shaft 24 geared directly to shaft 21, and drives shaft 21 in the reverse direction. During the interval the shaft 21 is reversed by a geared sector 25 which engages a segmental gear 31 on shaft 21. The sector 25 is oscillated by a connecting-rod 28 connected to a crank-pin 30 on an arm fixed to shaft 10. The gears may be enclosed in a casing 52 which may be filled with oil. In a modification, Fig. 8, the motion which is imparted to the oscillating sector for reversing the bed motion is controlled by employing a crank-pin 29, which can be adjusted during the working of the machine, to transmit motion from the connecting. rod 28 to the sector 25. As shown this pin 29 is carried by an eccentric bearing fitted with a lever arm 36 provided with a roller 37 which slides in a cam guide 43 fitted with one or more cusps 45 for rotating the bearing to vary the distance of the pin 29 from the pivot 30, or from the pivot 26 of the sector 25. As shown, the pin 29 is moved at times further from the pivot 26 and thus the extent of movement imparted to the sector 25 is diminished and the speed reduced. When the pin is returned, the speed is accelerated.
