Abstract

313,161. Vereinigte Eisenbahn- Signalwerke Ges. June 8, 1928, [Convention date]. Friction apparatus on permanent way.- Relates to brakes for railway vehicles of the kind comprising shoes or jaws mounted on the track and adapted to grip the wheels of passing vehicles and consists in arrangements whereby the wheel as it enters between the brake shoes tends by its rotation to release the brake, and as it it leaves the shoes tends to increase the grip, thereby preventing the tendency of the wheels to leave the rails. As shown in Fig. 1, the brake comprises a shoe 3 connected by a lever 10 to the piston rod 5 of a compressed air cylinder 4 and a second shoe 2 pivoted at 7 to the cylinder 4 and held normally in raised position against a stop 8 by a spring 9. The wheel 1 as it enters between the shoes depresses the shoe 2 against the action of the spring 9, thus reducing the braking pressure, and as it leaves tends to lift it again to increase the grip. The arrangement shown in Fig. 2 comprises a roller 11 bearing against the wheel 1 and also against a roller 14 disposed in a wedge-shaped recess 13. The entering part of the wheel 1 rotates the roller 11 in the direction of the arrow, thus causing the roller 14 to move upwardly in the recess 13 and so relieving the pressure on the wheel, while the leaving part of the wheel acts to force the roller into the recess and increase the pressure. In a further construction, a roller such as' 11 is spring mounted for vertical and slight lateral movement, and bears directly against a fixed inclined surface down and up which it is respectively forced to travel by the entering and leaving parts of the wheel.
