Abstract

312,904. Electrical Research Products, Inc., (Assignees of Burton, E. T.). June 2, 1928, [Convention date]. Addition to 312,338. Transmitting systems for code telegraphy.- Relates to a signal transmission system of the type described in the parent Specification wherein the signal waves are shaped for high-speed transmission over a line, e.g. a submarine cable, by transformers having high permeability and adapted to carry a continuously flowing biassing current. As shown in Fig. 1, a signal transmitter 10 transmits impulses through transformers 13, 14, 15 to the grid circuit of a valve amplifier 11. The transformer 13 repeats only the lowfrequency current components, the high-frequency components being repeated over transformers 14, 15 which are provided with biassing coils 21, 22 and cores having high permeability. The biassing coils are wound in opposition and the currents therein cause the saturated condition of the cores to be maintained until the signal currents through the primary coils 17, 18 reach a definite positive or negative value to produce a state of de-energization for the production of a current impulse in one or other of the secondary coils 19, 20. In this manner an impulse occurs in each secondary coil to produce a double impulse at each reversal of the signal current. The secondary coils are connected to the grid of the amplifier 11 through networks 27, 28, 29 wherein the secondary impulses may be adjusted in phase and amplitude and undesired high frequency voltages may be suppressed. The resistance 24 and condensers 25, 26 constitute a filter circuit which prevents entry of high frequency signal current to the amplifier through the transformer 13. The low and high frequency components are combined for amplification and transmission over the line 12 which is connected to the output of the amplifier 11 at a point between the plate battery 30 and battery 32. Fig. 2 shows the various stages for producing a final wave form C from the original signal current A. The biassing currents are represented by lines d and the point at which the signalling current becomes effective to overcome the biassing effect is shown by lines e, the point of saturation of the transformer cores being represented by the lines f. When the signal current passes through the range e, f impulses B<11> are produced which combined with the curve B<1> form the final wave shape C. Specification 258,614 is referred to.
