Abstract

Sept. 5, 1928. vices.-The base 1 of a vice has two parallel rails 2 connected by crossbars 3, 4 at the ends and centre, and the rails are formed with lateral channels with horizontal or converging walls 5 machined to provide guide surfaces for members 7 depending from the jaws, the jaws and guide rails being spaced apart elsewhere at 8 to reduce friction. Wear may be taken up by means of bolts 9 passing through the members 7 and through slots 10 in the rails; square heads 11 on the bolts slide on the inner surfaces of the rails. The jaws 6 are adjusted by a right and left-hand screw 12 engaging nuts 13 carried by the jaws, the screw being mounted in an end bearing 14 and a central bearing 15 and held against endwise movement by collars 16, 17. A cover plate 19 presents access of dirt or filings to the adjusting screw.
