Abstract

312,837. Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd., Davidson, A., Shepherdson, A., and Thomas, J. June 28, 1928. Anthraquinone. - The sulphonic acid byproducts formed in the manufacture of anthraquinone a-sulphonic acids are bydrolysed in dilute sulphuric acid solution in the presence of mercury salts while a passing current of superheated steam though the solution. The sulphonic acid groups in the a-position are split off to leave a mixture of anthraquinone and its #-sulphonic acids. In an example, sulphonated anthraquinone residues are heated to 180 C. in the presence of mercury and of sulphuric acid of 80 per cent strength and a current of superheated steam passing through removes the anthraquinone formed. Specification 200,851 is referred to.
