Abstract

312,526. Smith, H. July 4. 1928. Vibration - dampers. - Friction vibrationdampers are constructed and arranged so that the damping action increases in both directions of movement proportionately to the amount of movement and comprise an expansible brake drum, a brake shoe or shoes incapable of circumferential displacement, means for adjusting the radial position of the shoes and means for expanding the brake drum as relative movement between the bodies occurs to cause increased retarding engagement with the shoe or shoes. As shown, the shoes 7, 8 are positioned in a casing 3 having an arm 5 and may be adjusted radially by means of screws 11, guides 9, 10 preventing circumferential movement. The drum comprises sections 12, 13 having an hexagonal-shaped central aperture into which takes a correspondingly shaped part 19 secured to or forming part of a cover 4 secured to the arm 6. Movement of the arm 6 causes the drum 12, 13 to rotate and at the same time expand.
