Abstract

Cable joints.-Relates to the insulation of electric cable joints in which a paper or like wrapping is applied in the form of a roll or tube 7, Fig. 1, loosely surrounding the joint and then tightened by a rotary wrapping or stroking action. The roll is made from a strip having parallel sides and therefore of constant width at least for the inner turns of the tube. To obtain the initial grip of the innermost turns of the tube the end of a tool 9 e.g. a knife is inserted within the tube after it has been placed in position. Instead of or in addition to the tool the necessary adhesion can be obtained by sprinkling rosin upon the surface to be covered or by impregnating the insulation with oil. Fig. 2 shows a joint provided with five such tubes 7. The insulation is cut back and the conductors 4 united by a ferrule 5 covered by a paper insulation 6 and tape 10 so that the insulations 2<a>, 6, 3a form a continuous surface. Over these are two more tubes 7 arranged to break joint, and tapered layers of cotton tape 12 are applied at the ends of these tubes. The cable joint is enclosed on a lead casing 13 with a filling aperture 14. Lead foil is wrapped over the ends 2, 3 and tape fillings 15, a layer of tape is then applied and the whole secured by copper wire 16. Modifications are described in which one or three paper tubes are used.
