Abstract

312,207. Cook, G. H. Feb. 20, 1928. Joint-making packing. - In making jointmaking packing, brass or other wire is fed, together with a composition consisting of, for example, asbestos fibre and indiarubber, between rollers, so that the wire is incorporated in the sheet. Indiarubber mixed with asbestos fibre is worked up into a plastic mass, a quantity of rubber solvent being incorporated. The mass is then fed between a pair of heated rollers preferably disposed side by side. The wine reinforcement 'is also passed downwardly between the rollers so that it is positioned in the middle of the sheet. The wire may be drawn from spools located above the rollers, and the wire may be passed between rollers to space it. The sheetforming rollers are preferably mounted so that the distance between them may be regulated. The sheet may pass through a second pair of heated rollers, or may be vulcanized in a press.
